Decaf Coffee Is Getting Better: What Coffee Drinkers Should Know Before Ordering

Decaf Coffee is getting better

Decaf coffee has not always had the best reputation

Decaf coffee has not always had the best reputation.

For years, ordering decaf could feel like choosing the coffee nobody really wanted. The beans might have been sitting around too long. The flavor could be flat. And at some coffee shops, decaf seemed more like an obligation than something the shop was proud to serve.

Not anymore.

Better coffee beans, improved decaffeination methods, specialty roasters, and coffee drinkers who care about flavor are giving decaf another chance.

That raises an interesting question: Can decaf actually be great coffee?

Yes Absolutely.

But like regular coffee, quality depends on the beans, processing, roasting, freshness, brewing, and the people making it.

That makes your local independent coffee shop a great place to start exploring.

Is Decaf Coffee Good or Bad for you? Healthline: "Decafe Coffee: Good or Bad?"

Decaf Does NOT Mean Caffeine Free

Here is another common misunderstanding.

Decaf does not necessarily mean zero caffeine.

The decaffeination process removes the vast majority of caffeine, but small amounts may remain.

So if you need to avoid caffeine for a medical or dietary reason, do not assume that decaf means absolutely caffeine free. Talk with your healthcare professional about what is right for you.

Our job at Coffee Shop Reports is coffee education, we are not medical professionals seek medical advice about Caffeine from your doctor.

How Is Caffeine Removed From Coffee?

There are several ways to remove caffeine from green coffee beans.

One method you may see listed by independent coffee shops and roasters is the Swiss Water Process.

Swiss Water says its process uses water, temperature, time, Green Coffee Extract, and carbon filtration to remove caffeine while trying to preserve the coffee's original characteristics.

The process happens BEFORE roasting.

Another method you may encounter is often called the EA or sugarcane process. Other decaffeination methods also exist, including carbon dioxide and solvent-based systems. You do not need to memorize all of them to enjoy decaf.

But knowing that different processes exist gives you another useful question to ask:

How was this coffee decaffeinated?

A good barista or roaster should be able to tell you.

Why Did Decaf Have Such a Bad Reputation?

Part of the problem was simple.

If customers did not order much decaf, some shops did not put much attention into it.

The coffee shop may serve cheaper average decaf.

Coffee drinkers do not get excited about decaf coffee if the shop serves below average decaf coffee.

Few people order it.

The shop has even less reason to invest in better decaf.

Instead of treating decaf coffee as the forgotten pot in the corner, a shop can begin with quality coffee beans, work with a good roaster, brew it correctly, and serve it fresh. Education is also key, the shop needs to take the time to educate baristas and their customers.

Suddenly, decaf becomes coffee worth talking about.

Great Decaf Starts With Great Coffee

This may be the most important lesson in this entire article.

You cannot expect a bad decaffeination process to turn bad coffee into great coffee.

• The coffee you begin with matters • Where the coffee was grown matters. • Processing matter • Roasting matters   • Freshness matters   • Brewing matters

That means you should approach decaf the same way you approach other specialty coffees.

Ask:

    • Where was this coffee grown?
    • Who roasted it?
    • What are the tasting notes?
    • When was it roasted?
    • How was it decaffeinated?

The barista and shop owner will be impressed! Those questions tell you much more than simply asking:
“Do you have decaf?”

What Does Good Decaf Taste Like?

Good decaf should taste like good coffee.

That sounds obvious, but it is important.

If you read our Coffee Shop Reports guide to coffee tasting notes, the same idea applies here.

You do not need a special vocabulary just because the coffee is decaf.

Ask yourself:

    • Is it smooth?
    • Is it sweet?
    • Is it bitter?
    • Is it bright?
    • Does it have chocolate or nutty flavors?
    • Would I order it again?

Would you order it again? That is the best coffee test.

Can Espresso Drinks Be Made With Decaf?

If the shop has decaf espresso available, these coffee can be made with Decaf Coffee:

    • Latte
    • Cappuccino
    • Americano
    • Mocha
    • Flat white
    • Espresso

Ask your barista, if they can you make that latte with decaf espresso?

Then take the conversation one step further:
“What decaf coffee are you using?”

Why Independent Coffee Shops Matter to the Decaf Story

This is where things get especially interesting for Coffee Shop Reports. Independent shops have an opportunity to make decaf part of their identity. Imagine walking into a shop and finding a decaf coffee with:

    • The country of origin
    • Producer or region information
    • Roast date
    • Decaffeination method
    • Tasting notes
    • Brewing recommendations

That sends a completely different message than:

Decaf available. One says decaf is an afterthought. The other says: This is coffee we are PROUD to serve. That difference matters. Independent shops may work directly with smaller roasters or roast their own coffee. That gives them opportunities to explain why they chose a particular decaf and how they think it should taste. For curious coffee drinkers, that makes the coffee shop part classroom, part community gathering place, and part discovery experience. That is exactly the kind of independent coffee culture Coffee Shop Reports wants to support. Visit our Verified Visits Page, to learn more about the Coffee Shops we have visited.

Five Questions to Ask About Decaf at Your Local Coffee Shop

No. Decaffeination removes most caffeine, but small amounts can remain.

Not necessarily. Regular green coffee beans from coffee-growing regions around the world can be decaffeinated before they are roasted.

Coffee is generally decaffeinated while it is still green, before roasting.

It is a decaffeination process that uses water, temperature, Green Coffee Extract, and carbon filtration to remove caffeine while attempting to preserve the coffee's original characteristics.

It does not have to. Bean quality, decaffeination method, roasting, freshness, grinding, and brewing can all affect the final flavor.

Often, yes, if the shop has decaf espresso. Ask the barista whether your drink can be prepared with decaf.

Coffee Shop Reports Challenge: Give Decaf a Fair Shot

Here is a CSR challenge.

Visit an independent coffee shop that takes its coffee seriously.

Ask what decaf coffee they are serving.

Then ask the barista to recommend the best way to try it.

Maybe that is drip coffee.

Maybe it is an Americano.

Maybe it is espresso.

Maybe it is a latte.

Try it without deciding ahead of time that decaf is going to be bad.

Then ask yourself:

If nobody told me this was decaf, would I know?

And more importantly:

Would I order it again?

That is the test that matters.

This challenge is about learning and supporting independent coffee shops
